Women Empowered at Self-Defense Seminar in San Jose

This past Friday, Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu-San Jose hosted a free self-defense event for women in the community. We had 40 participants on the mat for a fun evening addressing serious matters for women and girls.

Rosie Demonstrates BJJ for Women’s Self-Defense

We are experts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and have developed a Women’s Self Defense program drawing from this expertise along with punching, kicking and other awareness tactics. BJJ is well known as the most effective martial arts and is the focus of our program. It was developed by the Gracie family specifically to neutralize size and power so it is an obvious choice for women’s self-defense curriculum.

Rosie is a brown belt in BJJ at our academy with over 15 years of experience. At the seminar, she demonstrated several defenses to man versus woman situations:

  • Man choking from front
  • Man choking from back
  • Man choking from top

Denise and Kim Demonstrate Striking and Awareness for Women’s Self-Defense

In addition to BJJ, our instructors demonstrated kickboxing, boxing, and hand-to-hand techniques for protection against strangers. Denise is experienced in Krav Maga, BJJ and other self-defense tactics, and Kim is experienced as a boxing and kickboxing instructor at Title Boxing Club in Mountain View along with training in BJJ. At the seminar, they demonstrated:

  • Effective groin kicks on man
  • How to prevent being a vulnerable-looking target
  • Use of voice and posture when a threat is looming
