San Jose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament

On Saturday, June 30, 2019, the competition team at Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in San Jose made its debut. Our first tournament as a team bonded the group and set off a chain reaction for competition. Three members from the dojo stepped up and the day ended with two gold medals and a silver medal, along with several other friends of the academy. Their courage spread throughout the dojo as several members headed over to SCU after Saturday afternoon class to watch their peers. Upcoming Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments for the team include IBJJF World Master’s in August and the US Open in October.

Victor M. started the team off with a couple of matches in brown belt. Although there were no matches in his own age group, Victor dropped down a few age categories and showed a warrior spirit against a much young and stronger competitor. Darren O. followed up with several blue belt matches working mainly from open guard position. CJ’s star is rising high after some spectacular matches in both gi and no gi divisions earning her double gold.

Jiu Jitsu World League 2019

This BJJ tournament was hosted by Jiu-Jitsu World League at Santa Clara University, in Santa Clara, California. The organization hosts gi and no gi grappling events in other areas of California, Dallas, Pheonix and other venues. Overall, the tournament is very well run. Venue was appropriate and easily accessible. Mats looked good and there was plenty of seating with music playing the whole time over the stadium sound system. Matches were on time. Referees were professional and uncontroversial. Software platform was useful with displays of points and time during a match, upcoming schedule of matches, and a useful website experience. Not sure of the total participation but there were hundreds of competitors.
