In May of 2019, Justine “Machine” Holder made his first adult promotions as the new location of Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in San Jose. These three students represent a new younger demographic at the gym. They each started in the Mountain View location and continued their journey here. Physically, each has shaped into a more athletic form since the start.
Congratulations to these three students making a mark on the San Jose mats!
BJJ White Belt Stripes Meaning
Stripes on a BJJ white belt are an indication of a student’s progression through the white belt rank, for various reasons. A student can earn up to four stripes as a white belt, but does not necessarily have to earn four stripes for promotion to blue belt. Students line up in rank order which includes stripe rankings. A white belt with three stripes may not necessarily be better in jiu-jitsu sparring than a white belt with one stripe. Each student is on an individual journey in BJJ.
How Long Does it Take to Get a Black Belt in BJJ?
A typical duration of time from white belt to black belt in BJJ is 10 years. Black belt ranking has objective components and may also have subjective components as to when a particular student is ready for black belt ranking. There are some cases of practitioners achieving black belt rank in a little over 3.5 years, but this is rare and even 8 years can be considered a fast track while 12 years is also within expectation.
Ralph Gracie notoriously ensures that students reach his personal standards before being promoted to any belt, especially black belt.
What are the Jiu-Jitsu Belt Ranks?
There are only five total rankings in the BJJ adult belt system:
- White Belt
- Blue Belt
- Purple Belt
- Brown Belt
- Black Belt
White belt is the first step in the belt system and represents a neophyte to the gentle art of Brazilian jiu jitsu. Some students may be awarded up to four stripes within a belt rank. Therefore, there are not many promotion opportunities within jiu jitsu and each is celebrated. Belts can be awarded at a school-wide ceremony or can be awarded at will by an instructor during class. Some are promoted on the award stand upon doing well in a BJJ tournament. The IBJJF publishes the most recognized ranking system.
